A residential-grade air conditioner – or even a marine AC unit specified for a temperate cruising ground – will struggle in the Gulf. Ambient seawater temperatures here can exceed 33°C in summer, which is the water most systems rely on to reject heat. If a system isn't sized and specified for that reality, it runs constantly, short-cycles, and fails early. Types of Marine AC Systems

Self-contained units are compact, independent systems best suited to smaller yachts or single-zone retrofits. Chilled-water systems use a central plant to chill water that's circulated to air handlers throughout the yacht – the standard choice for larger vessels needing multiple independently-controlled zones.

Sizing for Gulf Conditions

Manufacturer BTU guidance is almost always calculated against a lower design seawater temperature than the Gulf actually delivers in summer. Specifying a system based on temperate-market sizing charts is the single most common cause of underperforming marine AC in this region – work with a supplier who sizes against actual Gulf seawater and ambient temperatures, not the manufacturer's default assumptions.

  • Seawater pump and strainer capacity – undersized raw-water circuits are the top cause of high-heat shutdowns.
