The September Recommissioning Checklist for Gulf-Based Yachts

Open any spring commissioning checklist and you will find an instruction to inspect the engine intake strainer for damage “from ice.”
That single phrase tells you everything about why the standard checklists are the wrong tool here. They were written for a vessel emerging from a cold, wet, dark lay-up. Yours has spent four months in an oven. The failure modes are not the same ones, and several of the things that matter most in the Gulf appear on no published checklist at all.
What follows is a September recommissioning sequence built around thermal ageing, UV and biology rather than frost.
First principle: heat is a life-halving environment
Before the line items, one number that reframes the whole exercise.
Lead-acid battery service life “roughly halves for every 10 °C of sustained operation” above a comfort zone of 20–27 °C. The worked example is stark: a bank rated twenty years at 25 °C becomes a ten-year battery at 35 °C and a five-year battery at 45 °C (Microtex). Lithium is no better. For LiFePO₄, “every 10 °C increase above 25 °C halves the cycle life” — from 3,500–4,000 cycles at 25 °C and full depth of discharge down to roughly 2,000 cycles at 45 °C (Sunlit Energy).
Both figures are Arrhenius-consistent rules of thumb rather than measurements of your specific bank, and should be treated as such. But the direction is not in doubt, and neither chemistry gets a pass. An unventilated engine room at 45 °C through a Dubai summer costs you half the life of everything electrochemical in it.
That is the lens for September: what has aged, not what has frozen.
1. Fuel — the highest-consequence item, and the one most often skipped
Untreated ultra-low-sulphur diesel has a realistic storage life of 6 to 12 months, against 12–18 months for older high-sulphur grades, because “reduced sulfur content… previously acted as a natural preservative.” Recommended storage is “in cool areas, ideally below 85 °F” — 29 °C (Depco).
A fuel tank in a Dubai hull in August is nowhere near 29 °C. So treat 6–12 months as the ceiling, not the expectation. That is an inference from the storage guidance rather than a Gulf-specific measurement — no such measurement is published — but it is the right way to plan.
Then microbial growth. The numbers are genuinely alarming: “a colony can double in size in 20–30 minutes” and “one cell can multiply into 2 million in 7 hours.” Biofilm can grow millimetres thick and “can excrete acid which can erode a metal fuel tank” (IPU). Growth happens at the water–fuel interface, which is why sampling from the tank low point matters and sampling from the deck fill tells you nothing.
The sequence that works: sample from the low point and check the water bottom first. Remove water before anything else — dosing biocide into a wet tank treats the symptom. Then clean, polish, dose and stabilise. Interpretation should be against ASTM D6469, the governing guide for microbial contamination in fuels; note that its thresholds sit behind a paywall, so a laboratory that works to it is worth more than a dip-slide and an opinion.
2. The rubber audit
Everything elastomeric has been ageing at an accelerated rate, and the checklists point you at the wrong evidence.
Raw-water pump impeller. If it was left in place, expect blades that have taken a permanent set. The standard guidance is to remove the impeller for lay-up specifically “to prevent the blades that are 'squeezed' most from losing their elasticity” (Ocean Cruising Club). On inspection, look for “some or severe permanent set”, and treat end faces that are “hard and either polished or cracked, like carbon” as evidence of a dry run. One rule to give every crew member: do not run the pump for more than 20 seconds without liquid (West Marine).
Hoses. The test is the same one the cold-climate lists give — “inspect all hoses for stiffness, rot, leaks, and cracking” and “inspect all hose clamps for rust” (BoatUS) — but the search pattern is different. In a cold lay-up you look in the bilge. Here, prioritise the hot and sun-exposed runs: engine room, generator space, and anything visible on deck. The driver is heat-accelerated plasticiser loss and UV cracking, not freeze splitting. Double-clamp fuel lines, exhaust hoses and anything below the waterline.

Belts. If they were slackened for lay-up — which is correct practice — verify they have been retensioned before the first start. This is a genuinely common September failure.
Seals and O-rings. Look for compression set and permanent loss of recovery rather than hardening. Common EPDM is rated to around +80 °C and standard silicone to +100 °C (Parker O-Ring Handbook); a hot engine room brushes those limits. Hatch and door seals benefit from silicone grease or lanolin to stop them sticking and tearing.
3. Air conditioning — assume it needs work
The descale interval for a saltwater-operating vessel is around six months, and a summer lay-up has consumed most of one (West Bay). Worse, an idle condenser in 32 °C water is an excellent habitat, and freshwater flushing alone is not enough — significant buildup is typically still dislodged during a proper descaling pass after multiple freshwater flushes.
The reason this matters more here than anywhere else is the interlock. A high-pressure safety switch shuts the unit down if seawater temperature is excessive or cooling flow is lost. In Gulf water the unit is already close to that switch on seawater temperature alone, so a partly blocked strainer that would be a minor nuisance in the Mediterranean becomes a shutdown at anchor with guests aboard. Clean strainers, descale condensers, and check flow before the season, not during it.

4. Anodes, seacocks and the wet stuff
The published rule is blunt and worth keeping: “replace anodes that are more than half wasted away” (BoatUS). In high-salinity Gulf water they will have gone faster than the interval you are used to.
Exercise and lubricate every seacock, and check all through-hulls for leaks after launch, not before. A stuffing box should leak “no more than two or three drops each minute when prop shaft turning.” And run the classic deck test — “use a garden hose to check for deck leaks at ports and hatches” — because a summer of thermal cycling is exactly what opens up caulking and gasket lines.
On teak and caulking, there is no fixed inspection schedule; it depends on age, UV exposure and history. Look for caulk pulling away from the seam walls, visible cracking, or water entering beneath the deck. Quality caulk should give 10–15 years, and if seams need redoing, seam walls must be cleaned with acetone immediately before recaulking (Teakdecking Systems).
5. Interior — the failures nobody lists
Two things fail in a hot lay-up that appear on no cold-climate checklist. Headlining and upholstery adhesive softens with heat, which “often leads to sagging headliners, loose carpet, or upholstery lifting over time” (Midwest Fabrics) — check headlinings and panel edges by hand, not by eye. 6. Safety and documentation
Flares expire 42 months after manufacture — check dates rather than assuming. Inspect inflatable lifejacket cylinders and the dissolvable bobbins in auto-inflating models. Check the full length of the shore power cable and both ends of its connections, plus the vessel's receptacle for burn marks; heat and a long summer on shore power is exactly the combination that degrades them.
The September sequence, in order
- Fuel sample and water bottom, before anything runs
- Impeller out and inspected; belts retensioned; hose audit on hot runs
- Batteries load-tested, not just voltage-checked
- AC strainers cleaned, condensers descaled, flow verified
- Anodes replaced; seacocks exercised
- Deck hose test; caulking and seal inspection
- Interior: headlining adhesion, mould check, upholstery
- Safety equipment dates; shore power cable inspection
- Sea trial before the first charter or guest trip — not on it
