A watermaker that runs perfectly in the Mediterranean will work differently — and fail differently — in Gulf waters. Before the summer season changes your vessel's operational profile, here's what your engineer needs to review.
Fresh water independence is one of the defining luxuries of superyacht operation. A high-output reverse osmosis system means your guests shower in desalinated seawater, your laundry runs without marina hookup, and your vessel can stay on anchor for extended periods without logistical compromise. But that system is only as reliable as its maintenance history — and in the Arabian Gulf, maintenance intervals look different from almost anywhere else in the world.
Why Gulf Water Is Harder on Watermaker Systems
The Arabian Gulf has some of the highest salinity levels of any navigable body of water globally — consistently measuring between 38,000 and 45,000 ppm TDS (total dissolved solids), compared to the Atlantic's roughly 35,000 ppm. Combined with water temperatures that can exceed 33°C at the surface during summer months, the operating environment for an RO membrane is significantly more demanding than the specifications most systems were designed around.
Higher salinity means the high-pressure pump works harder to force water through the membrane at acceptable recovery rates. Higher water temperatures accelerate membrane degradation and provide more favourable conditions for biological fouling — the colonisation of membrane surfaces by bacteria and algae that permanently reduces output and water quality.

The Four Pre-Summer Checks That Actually Matter
1. Membrane performance test. Run a full output test against the manufacturer's rated production at your current water temperature and salinity. A membrane operating at less than 80% of rated output in acceptable conditions is a membrane that needs replacement before the summer operating period begins — not during it.
2. Pre-filter and strainer inspection. Gulf waters carry higher particulate loads close to ports and anchorages. Pre-filter elements that were changed six months ago may be substantially blocked. A clogged pre-filter doesn't just reduce output — it starves the high-pressure pump and causes premature wear.
3. High-pressure pump service. Pump seals and valves in Gulf operation should be on shorter service intervals than the manufacturer's standard recommendation — typically 1,500–2,000 hours rather than 2,500. Heat degrades seal materials, and a pump failure mid-season on a crewed charter vessel is an expensive emergency.
4. Flush protocol review. If the vessel is entering a layup period, the correct membrane preservation procedure is critical. Membranes left in untreated standing water — especially warm standing water — develop biological fouling within weeks. Proper biocide preservation with sodium bisulfite solution, followed by correct storage pressure management, is non-negotiable for Gulf layups.

The most common water maker failures on Gulf vessels aren't caused by operational stress. They're caused by improper shutdown and storage. A system flushed with fresh water but not properly preserved will begin to develop biofilm on the membrane surface within 7–10 days at temperatures above 30°C. Once established, biofilm cannot be fully removed by standard cleaning procedures — the membrane requires replacement.

Output Planning for Summer Charter Operations
For vessels continuing to operate through the Gulf summer on charter, water consumption planning deserves specific attention. Guest water consumption on a fully crewed superyacht in hot weather — accounting for showering frequency, laundry loads, deck washing, and cooking — can comfortably exceed 400 litres per person per day. On a 10-guest vessel, that's 4,000+ litres daily.
If your watermaker is rated at 3,000 litres per day at 25°C water temperature, it will produce less than that in 33°C Gulf summer water — because recovery rates decline as temperature rises. Verify your system's actual output at operating temperatures before committing to extended passages without marina access.
The Captain's Role
Water quality and production monitoring is one of the maintenance tasks most easily delegated and most easily neglected. A TDS meter check on product water should be part of the daily log. A sudden increase in product water TDS — even while output volume remains normal — is the first indicator of membrane breach. Catching it early means intervention before guests are exposed to off-specification water, and before a small problem becomes a full membrane replacement.
The watermaker is not glamorous equipment. But on a vessel in Gulf summer operation, it is among the most critical. Treat it accordingly before the season peaks.
